Based on the musical by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand) dreams of a career in show business and actually becomes the first big female star of the famous "Ziegfield Follies". She falls passionately in love with the gambler and bon vivant Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif).
They marry and become parents, but their lives turn out to be too different. While Fanny's success continues to grow, Nick's luck in the game runs out...
The musical "Funny Girl" by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill was performed on Broadway in New York in 1964. Barbra Streisand already played the role of Fanny Brice here.
Oscar in 1969 in the category "Best Female Lead" and seven further nominations.
"Hollywood musical with a big set about a Broadway star of the twenties. More routine and quite nice than brilliant, and only outstanding because of Barbra Streisand from a similar confection." (Evangelical Film Observer)
