Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is set in the year 2032, or three years after the first film. The line between humans and machines has been blurred almost beyond distinction. While anti-terrorist unit Public Security Section 9 detective Batou is still trying to cope with the disappearance of the Major, he is assigned the case of Hadaly-type gynoids -a new line of female robots created for sexual companionship- that have started slaughtering their owners with no apparent reason. And none of the families of the victims has apparently attempted to sue Locus Solus, the company that produces the malfunctioning robots. In the course of the investigation, almost entirely cyber-bodied Batou and his still largely human partner Togusa will take on ferocious Yakuza thugs, devious hackers, government bureaucrats, and corporate criminals to uncover the shocking truth behind the crime.
