Craig Schwartz wants to become famous as a puppeteer and replace his extinct love for his wife Lotte with his newly rekindled passion for office colleague Maxine. Wishes that come true in the most unusual way when he discovers he has access to John Malkovich's head and manipulates the Hollywood star as a medium for his own ambitions.
The ingenious puppeteer Craig Schwartz is professionally, privately and financially at the end of his tether. To get rid of his money and relationship worries, Craig takes a filing job on the curious 7 1/2th floor of a skyscraper. There he not only falls in love with the cold Maxine, but also discovers a secret portal that allows him a brief visit to the body of Hollywood star John Malkovich. Craig lets Maxine in on his discovery, which turns the short trip into a box-office hit - and an obsession for everyone involved.
