Johan Grande was born on the rugged Norwegian island of Frøya. The Grandes are outsiders in the small village. Johan's parents were resistance fighters who blew up strategically important bridges during the occupation of Norway by the German Wehrmacht - on their own initiative and beyond the official party strategies. After his parents were accidentally killed during one of their blasting operations, Johan's enthusiasm for explosions lives on. It gives him stability, as does his love for his wild horse Ella and the neighbor girl Solvor. Together, he and Solvor try out detonators and, tentatively, their first love - until another explosive incident occurs...
