Wim Wenders music documentary about the venerable masters of Cuban Son.
In March 1998, Wim Wenders follows his friend Ry Cooder to the recording of Ibrahim Ferrer's first solo record in Havana. The following month, the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club, some of whom are elderly, give their first two concerts ever in Amsterdam, soon followed by an acclaimed concert at New York's sold-out Carnegie Hall in July of last year.
In their home country, they are revered like cult figures, the legendary soneros of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Their music is a symbol of the pulsating life in Cuba, expressing the dreams and longings of the people. When the idols of yesteryear meet once again to record the album "Buena Vista Social Club", the whole world becomes aware of their music. The album sells more than three million copies and the "Super-Abuelos" (super grandfathers) are enthusiastically celebrated at concerts in Amsterdam and New York.
