Emily Brontë (EMMA MACKAY) grows up as the daughter of a vicar in rural Yorkshire. The stubborn, serious girl is considered peculiar in the village. Emily feels most at home in nature - and in her fantasy world: when she makes up stories together with her siblings, the outsider blossoms. But there is no more room for such "spinning": the Brontë sisters have to contribute to the family's upkeep. Emily is expected to become a governess, just like her sensible older sister Charlotte (ALEXANDRA DOWLING). The pressure of expectations is getting to shy Emily. Only her rebellious brother Branwell (FIONN WHITEHEAD), who would rather have licentious parties than live up to their father's standards, understands her. Emily surprisingly finds an ally in her new tutor, William Weightman (OLIVER JACKSON-COHEN). The two are irresistibly drawn to each other. But even William finds Emily's stubbornness and passion for writing uncanny.
