Iyi is a small village on the Gulf of Guinea. Cut off from the outside world, the people live deeply rooted in their own culture. They proudly wear their bright white make-up and honor the goddess Mami Wata, who is said to bring them protection and good luck. The name of the water spirit comes from Pidgin English, means "mother of water" and has even survived in the Caribbean on the other side of the Atlantic. People entrust their own wealth to Mama Efe, who acts as a mediator for the deity on earth. When the time comes for one of her daughters to become active, tensions arise in the family. And when a boy dies, Mama Efe's powers and the existence of the goddess are called into question.
