Shortly before Christmas, ten-year-old Stine arrives in a small, snowy village. In search of a warm place to sleep, she ends up in the shoemaker Andersen's house in Schustergasse. However, it is not long before the grumpy old man, who cherishes his quiet, secluded life, discovers the uninvited guest. With her outgoing, cheeky nature, Stine quickly wins over not only the cobbler but also the other villagers. But what is the strange girl doing here all alone so close to Christmas?
