While the child prodigy Mozart rises to become the musical sensation of the century, a murderous plan matures in his embittered rival Salieri.
It is the 19th century and the setting is Austria. Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), a former court composer, mutilates himself and ends up in a mental hospital. He tells his story, which is closely linked to one of the greatest artistic personalities of all time: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce). He quickly achieves considerable fame, but also attracts envy. The ageing court composer Antonio Salieri is appalled by Mozart's vulgar nature - in Salieri's eyes, Mozart simply does not deserve his superhuman talent. From then on, he did everything in his power to destroy Mozart's career, although he always admired the composer's magnificent musical output.
