Based on the musical 'Irma la Douce' by Marguerite Monn.
Nestor Patou (Jack Lemmon), a bona fide and over-committed gendarme, initiates a raid on a hotel in the Parisian red-light district. Since Patou's superior, Inspector Lefevre, is among the arrested johns, Nestor loses his job. But he has caught fire for the prostitute Irma La Douce (Shirley MacLaine) and soon becomes her protector, more by chance than anything else. How long will this last?
Marilyn Monroe was considered for the title role, but she died before filming began. Just like Charles Laughton, who was intended for the role of "Moustache".
The actual actress Shirley MacLaine signed the contract without having read the script, as she had "confidence in Wilder and Lemmon".
1964 Oscar for Best Music (André Previn)
1964 Golden Globe for Shirley MacLaine in the "Best Actress" category
"A dismissed Parisian policeman steals a naive street girl from her brutal pimp and leads her down the aisle through a cunning but nerve...
