Moscow in the 1930s: The work of a well-known writer (Yevgeny Zyganov) is censored by the Soviet state and the premiere of his play is canceled. Inspired by his lover Margarita (Julia Snigir), he begins work on a new novel in which all the people from his real life appear in satirically exaggerated characters. The focus is on Woland (August Diehl) as a mystical, dark force who visits Moscow to take revenge on all those responsible for the author's ruin. As the Master, as he calls himself from now on, delves deeper and deeper into his story, he gradually becomes unable to distinguish between reality and fiction ...
