At the international physics congress in Copenhagen, the world-famous nuclear physicist Michael Armstrong (Paul Newman) surprises his fiancée and assistant Sarah Sherman (Julie Andrews) by suddenly having to leave. Sarah follows him and is horrified to discover that Michael has defected to East Berlin. What she doesn't suspect is that there are other secrets.
After the previous failure of MARNIE, Hitchcock was given Paul Newman and Julie Andrews by the studio that had given him the money to make the film, although he did not want to work with method actor Paul Newman in particular.
