In a time of upheaval between two world wars, a number of very different people travel to the remote and previously uninhabited Galápagos island of Floreana in search of a new life beyond the conventions of civilization. The first are the German doctor and philosopher Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) and his lover Dore Strauch (Vanessa Kirby). Ritter is writing a philosophical manifesto and also wants to cure Dore of her multiple sclerosis. After some time, the press learns about the unconventional couple and inspires the World War II veteran Heinz Wittmer (Daniel Brühl) to follow them, together with his son Harry and his young wife Margret (Sydney Sweeney). Initially inexperienced in dealing with the forces of nature, they gradually do better and better.
The harsh rejection by Ritter and Dore gives way to a slow rapprochement. Until one day the capricious Eloise Wehrborn de Wagner-Bosquet (Ana de Armas) appears on the island, a mysterious self-proclaimed baroness. She has two young men...
