Massachusetts in the freezing winter of 1964: Eileen Dunlop leads a bleak life. The young woman lives in a run-down apartment with her alcoholic and irascible father. Working as a secretary in a juvenile detention center, she is an unloved outsider. One day, when the glamorous and mysterious Rebecca Saint John joins the prison staff, Eileen unexpectedly feels new vigor in her life. She feels irresistibly drawn to the mysterious woman.
