Verdi's last masterpiece is based on Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor".
Sir John Falstaff is a conceited snob who is enthusiastic about himself and considers himself irresistible despite his ample corpulence. But he is in trouble, because such a belly also wants to be filled and that costs. He promises himself help by writing identical love letters to the ladies Alice Ford and Meg Page, in order to gain access to the fortunes of their husbands through the hearts of the ladies. But the ladies far outnumber the cocky philanderer and decide to set a trap for Falstaff, making a fool of him. And then there are Nannetta and her lover Fenton. Nannetta, Ford's daughter, is to marry the unloved Dr. Caius at her father's behest. The Merry Wives of Windsor" successfully prevent this, too! The opera ends with the fugue "Tutto nel mondo è burla" - everything on earth is fun and man is a fool!
Robert Carsen's much-lauded production is set in the countryside of 20th century England. The International Herald Tribune celebrated it as an "imaginative page-turner."
