The adolescent orphan Pip benefits from a mysterious inheritance that enables him to live as a young gentleman in London. To his surprise, the former galley convict Magwitch, whom he helped to escape in his childhood and who has since become wealthy, turns out to be his patron. After an unsuccessful attempt to smuggle him out of the country, Magwitch dies in Pip's arms, but it turns out that Pip's childhood sweetheart Estella is Magwitch's daughter, who was thought to be dead.
The adolescent orphan Pip is the beneficiary of a mysterious inheritance. To his surprise, the former galley convict Magwitch, whom he helped to escape in his childhood, turns out to be his benefactor. David Lean's brilliant adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel, in which the then 32-year-old Alec Guiness makes his debut in a supporting role.
