Astronaut Matt Kowalski and his inexperienced colleague Dr. Ryan Stone are on a routine mission outside their shuttle in Earth orbit when they are surprised by a storm of satellite debris. Their colleagues are killed, the shuttle is destroyed, communication with headquarters in Houston is lost and Ryan's oxygen is running low. The only rescue is a walk through space to a Russian space station. But even there, the fight for survival is not over.
