In 1755, the Danish King Frederik V calls for the settlement of the wild heaths of Jutland. No one had yet managed to stand up to the merciless nature there. The former soldier Ludvig Kahlen has nothing to lose and wants to conquer the no man's land. But the power-hungry landowner Frederik De Schinkel claims ownership of the land and tries to make Kahlen fail with money, intrigue and violence. Ludvig stands up to the unscrupulous ruler and the relentless forces of nature with unwavering determination. He receives support from a young maid and a little girl, of all people, who break through his stern façade and persuade him to make a courageous decision.
