Bona fide tween Alejandro (Julio Torres) is an aspiring toy designer and hopeless dreamer. Growing up in El Salvador, he was raised by his artistically gifted mother in a playful fantasy world of unlimited possibilities - and now struggles to bring his extraordinary ideas to life in the crowded juggernaut that is New York.
When he suddenly loses his job and his visa threatens to expire, Alejandro meets the eccentric art critic Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), who offers him an assistant position in return for her intercession with the immigration authorities. And while Alejandro clings to this last chance to make his dreams come true after all, Elizabeth drags him deeper and deeper down the bizarre rabbit hole of the US metropolis and its many pitfalls.
