In Verdi's political drama, love and duty clash as much as nations. The title role is sung by Elena Stikhina, and the conductor is Antonio Pappano.
The princess in Aida, a valuable prize in the war between Egypt and Ethiopia, has been kidnapped. Meanwhile, the ambitious soldier Radames struggles with his feelings for her. As they grow closer, both must make the agonizing choice between loyalty to their homeland and their love for each other. In this new production, director Robert Carsen sets Verdi's large-scale political drama in a contemporary world.
A modern, totalitarian state apparatus provides the backdrop for the power struggles and toxic jealousies.
Royal Opera House music director Antonio Pappano conducts Verdi's magnificent, monumental score.
