The Christmas holidays should be the most contemplative time of the year. But it is more difficult than expected to turn this wish into reality. Family man Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) naturally wants to offer his loved ones something and so the Griswolds set off into the forest to cut down a Christmas tree. With some effort they succeed, but their delusions of grandeur lead to serious difficulties when it comes to putting up the tree at home. Once the problems have been solved under chaotic circumstances, the absurd feats of strength continue with the gigantic lighting of the house. Clark's plans not only run into more and more obstacles, he also attracts the ire of the neighbors. When Clark's cousin Eddie Johnson (Randy Quaid) shows up with his entire family without telling them in advance, the situation gets more and more out of hand and instead of calm, chaos reigns.
