David Bowie makes his way through Berlin in the twenties as a dancer.
Prussian aristocrat Paul von Pryzgodski falls victim to the last explosion of the war during an assault in 1918. In Berlin, Helga, the widow of a general, gives him access to society, coquette Eva puts up with him, his captain wants him to join the Nazi party. Singer Cilly leaves Germany and makes a career in Hollywood. Paul becomes a gigolo, the "constant companion" of an old lady. Cilly marries a German prince. Street battles between Nazis and Communists rage in the city. Paul is hit by a ricochet and dies.
