In 1934 London, Jimmy Erskine (Ian McKellen) is the city's most famous and feared theater critic. His reviews in the Daily Chronicle start and end careers, and anyone who doesn't convince him has to take a hard knock. This includes aspiring actress Nina Land (Gemma Arterton), who has long adored him.
When the boss of the Chronicle dies and his son David Brooke (Mark Strong) takes over the paper, Erskine quickly comes under his scrutiny - his personality is too extravagant, his behavior too hedonistic, with all-night parties and secret meetings with young men like his “secretary” Tom (Alfred Enoch).
Suddenly the critic sees both his job and his lifestyle in jeopardy, and he hatches a diabolical plan. In order to keep the upper hand over Brooke, he draws the unsuspecting Nina into a dangerous web of intrigue, blackmail and deception - with murderous consequences ...
