When American backpackers Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) run out of money, they are forced to take on a bar job in the remote THE ROYAL HOTEL in the Australian outback. They soon find themselves in a nerve-wracking situation that threatens to spiral out of control.
The name of the pub sounded promising to the two friends, like an adventurous backpacker trip full of sunshine and crates of alcohol. But the reality in the run-down mining town is a harsh blow: dirty, ruthless and rough. Nevertheless, Hanna and Liv decide to stick it out for a few weeks to finance a lavish vacation finale on Bondi Beach. They are cheap labor for gruff bar owner Billy (Hugo Weaving) and a crisp new change of pace for his regulars. The fun of the unbridled down-under drinking culture soon comes to an end when the increasingly crude come-ons and vulgar games escalate into a threat.
