The Motion Picture is considered one of the most iconic musical performances in modern history. In front of an audience of 5000 fans at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, David Bowie said goodbye to his Ziggy Stardust incarnation on July 3, 1973. Although this decision came as a shock to fans (and the band!), it was a pivotal moment in securing Bowie's future.
The move away from Ziggy was an important early step on Bowie's path to becoming the restless, curious and versatile artist who had an unprecedented impact on music, film, fashion and beyond.
Ziggy Stardust's brief existence had far-reaching effects, inspiring artistic and ideological freedom, and is still considered unmatched by musicians and the broader creative community.
DA Pennebaker, award-winning director (best known for Dylan's classic 1967 documentary, Don't Look Back), captured the band's performance on large-format 35mm film. To mark the 50th anniversary of one of Bowie's most courageous and celebrated moments, a new version of the film is now available.
This rescanned anniversary edition contains the complete, uncut performance, including rarely shown scenes of legendary guitarist Jeff Beck.
It features a fully restored 4K visual mix overseen by DA Pennebaker's son Frazer and Chris Hegedus, in addition to a new 5.1 mix performed by star producer Tony Visconti.
